Chalk and Coffee About

Hey y’all! Welcome to my little corner of the internet. I’m an enneagram 2w3 in life, but a 3w2 in the professional world, and I currently live in College Station, Texas. Chalk and Coffee began as a digital portfolio and has grown into this magical space where I get to share ideas and learn with all of you! I love sharing all of the math ideas and read alouds, favorite earring finds, and bits of encouragement along the way. I hope this space fills you with joy, inspiration, and a better understanding of how to effectively teach in an engaging way. Thanks for following along!

Currently THRIVING in the middle of of pumpkin spice latte season (I’ve been getting about 2 a week, don’t tell my husband lol) and can’t wait for holiday drinks to join the party in a couple months.🎃❄️⁣
⁣
Afternoon coffee will always hold a special place in my heart, but during the school year, morning coffee is my fav. Not the morning coffee you take to school and hope you get to drink before it gets cold. I mean the piping hot cup that I sip while reading before I even get ready for the day. Just the thought of it brings me joy. 💗⁣
⁣
What’s your favorite season or time to drink coffee? (As if there’s a wrong answer 😜)⁣
⁣
And shoutout to my BFF @alattelearning for surprising me with this mug. 🥰
#feetupfriday on a Monday because I survived day 1 #feetupfriday on a Monday because I survived day 1 of the 2nd six weeks which included two more onsite classes than what I had been teaching. Also, because I liked my shoes.😍⁣
⁣
As of today, I am no longer a virtual teacher.🙌🏼 The 1st six weeks I had 3 onsite classes and 2 virtual classes. Managing both was HARD. Teaching virtually is challenging, but adding actual onsite classes into that was just a lot. 🥴 Now that we’ve started a new grading period, a huge majority of virtual students across the district decided to come back to school. I am so excited to only have one type of teaching to focus on now!🎉⁣
⁣
How are you currently teaching?👩🏼‍🏫
How do you hook your students in your lesson?⁣
⁣
Y’all already know how much I LOVE incorporating energizers into my lessons.😍 It’s an easy way to spiral in skills you don’t get to practice often and have conversations about math. ⁣
⁣
Even if you’re teaching virtually, you can still do energizers! 🙌🏼 Today I shared a few of my favorite energizers that can be found online and done in-person or in a zoom meeting. ⁣
⁣

The special offer that includes 3 months of free internet ends soon, so check my stories to see if it is available in your area! #ad #AlwaysOn

Don’t forget that you can always check out my energizers highlight for more things you can do in your classroom! ✨
As a someone who does both on-site and virtual tea As a someone who does both on-site and virtual teaching, a document camera is a MUST HAVE for me!✨⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I have been using my @hue_hd camera basically every day this school year. I really like how in Zoom meetings with my virtual students, I can change my camera to show my document camera. Last week I stuck a white board underneath and was able to quickly and easily practice some problems.🙌🏼⁣⁣
⁣
I am partnering with HUE to give one of these cameras to one of you!⁣

First FIFTH GRADE math read aloud of the year! 🎉📚 ⁣
⁣
If you’ve been following me for any length of time then you know that it is a huge passion of mine to integrate reading picture books to students in math class.🙌🏼⁣
⁣
On Beyond a Million is such a cute book to explain the Powers of Ten. This book could also work for y’all 3rd grade Texas teachers. 💛 I remember having to introduce powers of ten before even teaching multiplication and feeling the worst about it because it was just too difficult of a concept for them to grasp.⁣
⁣
Don’t forget, you can always find my list of 3rd grade math read alouds linked in my bio! I’ll update it with 5th grade books as I use them in my classroom.✨
Today we went bowling to review for our first test Today we went bowling to review for our first test tomorrow! 🎳

Students were told that they worked at a bowling alley and there were some problems that needed to be fixed.🛠They practiced representing, comparing, rounding, and adding & subtracting decimals. The team in each class that showed the best teamwork got to bowl for a prize.🎉

This review was still safe, too. 🙌🏼 Students sat at their seats and worked through their activities using the multiple sets I pre-made. But honestly, just having the bowling alley, music, and neon light was enough to get them engaged today. You can still keep things simple & engaging while being safe. 💛
I love the fresh start that a new month brings. 💕

September is going to be full of learning, launching guided math, and cooler temps... aka dropping to the 80s occasionally.😅

What are you hoping this fresh month brings?🍂
Y E A R S I X 🎉6️⃣⁣ ⁣ Wow. What a day. Y E A R S I X 🎉6️⃣⁣
⁣
Wow. What a day. Preparing for this year has been wildly different than the other 5 years. I know theres a lot of anxiety out there right now about going back to school. I was literally nervous that I forgot HOW to teach this morning. 😂 Were there frustrations in my day? Absolutely! It wasn’t 100% smooth sailing. ⁣
⁣
But you know what made it worth it? ⁣
The kids.⁣
⁣
I was truly overcome with emotion when I saw them filling the hallways, looking for their first period classes this morning. Just to have that sense of normalcy back was much needed, but it wasn’t even the best part. ⁣
⁣
The best part of my day was being able to see kids who were excited and eager to be in school with other kids & teachers again. 🥰The joy that shone through my student’s eyes (since I couldn’t see their smiles #maskup) and in their actions truly FILLED my cup. The fact that I got to say the words “turn and talk” or yell “SHARK BAIT!” are such small things that I actually missed doing and I hope to never take for granted again.⁣
⁣
Yes, this year is going to be different. Every day won’t be easy. But y’all, I wouldn’t miss it for the world.💕⁣
“Failure is not your destination, it is only you “Failure is not your destination, it is only your process.”✨⁣
⁣
I heard this quote from @bpfleming during @getyourteachon’s virtual conference this summer and it just STUCK. My teaching philosophy has always been that failure is an option as long as you get back up. This quote just hit the nail on the head.💙⁣
⁣
This year is going to be full of failure. We are going to be constantly trying ideas, seeing if they work, and modifying as needed. And that’s okay! It’s okay to fail.🙌🏼⁣
⁣
⭐️Teaching my students that it’s okay to fail starts with me.⁣⭐️
⁣
I wanted this quote front and center in my room because I want it to stick in my student’s heads just like it’s stuck in mine. I want them leaving everyday knowing that if they didn’t grasp a skill or felt like they failed and need more practice, that’s not their end game and they aren’t a failure. 📚 Tomorrow is a new day and eventually they’ll reach the level of success they’re aiming for.⁣
⁣
This year we ALL will need a little bit of grace and a lot of patience. I hope we all remember to extend that to our students and still give them a high five when they fail and encourage them to get back up and continue working towards their destination. 💕
